Traffic Clerk must receive cargo, verify items against various documents, and insure shipments are properly packaged and documented for forwarding. The incumbent performs clerical and physical tasks in connection with the shipping of goods.

Scope of Duties

  • Shipping duties typically involve the following: verifies that orders are accurately filed by comparing items and quantities of goods (weight, # of items, measurements) gathered for shipment against documents; insures that shipments are properly packaged, identified with on-hand notice and shipping information (airway bill), and loaded into transporting vehicles; and prepares and maintains records of goods shipped; manifests; bills of lading, O.H notices. Freight is labeled; stacked on pallets; staged in loading area for delivery; truck pro’s are typed.
  • Receiving duties typically involve the following: verifies the correctness of incoming shipments by comparing items and quantities unloaded against bills of lading, invoices, manifests, storage receipts, or other records; checks for damaged goods – if cargo and not container is damaged, shipper is contacted for instruction; produces damage control reports; insures goods are appropriately identified for routing and prepares and maintains records of goods received; items are stocked in accordance with standard procedures; cargo is traced through to its destination; may sign bills of lading.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of warehouse and cargo.
  • Operates and maintains forklift in off loading and loading of trucks. Also operates and maintains hand-jack, hi-lo, packaging equipment.
  • Logs shipment into computer and produces inventory and shipping reports used both internally and by customers. Responsible for meeting internal and external customer requirements for delivery and receipt of cargo.
  • May generate invoices for customers or billing for warehouse storage; checks that licenses, registrations and releases from customs are in order and that Shipper’s Export Declarations are properly validated by U.S. Customs.


  • High School Diploma required
  • 6 months experience in driving a forklift preferred
